The three Advanced Theatre Workshop modules at level 5 utilise the theatre studio as a laboratory for the practical examination of key aspects of theatre practice – under the broad headings of acting, directing and design – and encourage students to consider the interrelationship between intellectual and somatic modes of understanding. They aim to establish a critical, self-reflexive understanding of some well-established principles of theatre practice, an awareness of the development of those principles, and a practical and conceptual exploration of them.
Advanced Theatre Workshop: Design seeks to interrogate the function of stage design as a key compositional element of performance making. It provides an introduction to the visual and technical aspects of theatre production through study of the history, development, and practice of stage design and the work of key scenographic practitioners. Design and scenography are explored through academic reading, practical exercises, theatre visits and fieldwork. Depending on the tutor’s specialism, this module might be taught with a focus on the role of digital media in performance design.
