Program Overview

Spend a semester studying film in the brand new, state-of-the-art Sir David Bell media centre on the beautiful campus of London’s University of Roehampton. Choose from a variety of modules (courses) in film, photography, digital media and storytelling, producing, and more. You can also choose from an extensive course listing in a variety of other disciplines. During your semester abroad, you will live in a single room with your own ensuite bathroom in an on-campus flat, where you will share common rooms, a large kitchen, and other amenities with other PAA students and students from around the world.

Our Site Director Anna will lead several excursions and trips including a film-themed walking tour in central London followed by a film at a London cinema, backstage tour of the Royal Opera House (home to the Royal Ballet) and attendance at a premier dance performance in central London, a visit to Shakespeare’s iconic Globe Theatre, a day trip to Bath to see the Fashion Museum, Roman Baths, and Victoria Art Gallery, and a day trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and grave, tour backstage at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), and attendance at an RSC performance.

Just one unforgettable experience. I made friends for life and I discovered what kind of path I want to make in my career. I also discovered things about myself I didn’t know before. I wish it never ended.

Housing

Spend your semester immersed in the life of a British student by living in a student flat (apartment) right on campus. You will have your own room with a private ensuite bathroom in a suite that you share with 6 – 8 other British and international students. Your floor will have a spacious common area as well as a full kitchen where you can cook yourself meals to save money for independent travel and film tickets! This small group setting will help you build friendships and community while you study abroad. Classroom buildings, restaurants, and the student center are all nearby. Enjoy the independence of living on your own while still creating lasting relationships with other students!

Roommates

You will have your own single room and ensuite bathroom in the housing. PAA usually has at least a dozen students on campus each semester studying film, dance, and theatre who join hundreds of study abroad students from all over the world. You will spend most of your time with other students in the film department, as you log studio time and collaborate on creative projects.

A Day in the Life

The Participant Experience

“Cut!” You step into the scene to adjust a light and direct the actor to angle their face slightly down to cast more of a shadow. You’re holding a coffee from the student cafe where the “Growhampton” club provides eggs from the campus chickens. This film is the latest project in one of your three classes, where you have access to multiple studios and state-of-the-art equipment. Next week you will take the bus into central London for the screening of an independent film your professor worked on, followed by a meal at one of the city’s many exquisite restaurants. You and some friends have a weekend trip planned to Spain where you will take a break from the hard production work and relax while exploring another iconic European city. You think back to the uncertainties at the beginning of the semester, and how the unfamiliar faces who greeted you upon arriving on campus are now friends for life. This experience has truly changed you, and set you on a new and exhilarating path in your personal life and career.

On Arrival

You will book your flight to arrive at Heathrow Airport in London (LHR) on the arrival day. A PAA Roehampton representative will be waiting at a pre-arranged meeting point, and you will make your way to a bus that will take you to campus.

Upon arrival on campus, you will receive a welcome pack and be greeted by an on-campus representative who will help you find your room. Your first afternoon will be a chance to unpack, settle in, meet other students, and join a Roehampton welcome dinner. The following day, the university will lead on-site orientation activities to prepare you for your experience in London and help you get to know other students. The next day, you will meet with an advisor to finalize your registration and class enrollment. Our site director Anna will take you out for a Welcome Meal and our PAA orientation. This orientation will include important information about the city, an overview of local culture, information about the film and performing arts scenes in London, transportation, food and other need-to-knows. The following day, you will join more university orientation activities, such as a “Photo Frenzy Day”, which is an epic photo scavenger hunt that will take you into central London for a chance to win prizes!

A Typical Day

The following days will include additional pre-class activities, and a PAA-led visit to Shakespeare’s Globe for a theatre tour, afternoon tea, and attendance at a show. Classes will begin shortly thereafter. For the rest of your time on the program, you will be living on campus, going to class, and exploring the city on your own as a student in London. We will provide cultural activities and excursions throughout your semester, and several day trips included in the cost of the program.
