Introduction to Arts Management

This module is designed to give students an introduction to management strategies in arts organizations in preparation for employment possibilities in the arts. It exposes students to the function of arts management, how arts organizations are run, the range of employment experiences available within these institutions and organizations, and practical skills and methods needed to engage within arts fields. The module looks at the development of arts management and addresses theoretical and practical models of management with particular attention to issues such as: professional practices, business planning, fundraising, budget management, project management, marketing and digital development, organisational behaviour, and audience development.
Students will research a range of employment possibilities across the arts sector such as Curator, Event/Festival Producer, Theatre/Production/Stage Manager, Business Manager, Public Relations/Marketing Director, Artistic Director, etc. to understand their function across the field. The module will engage with colleagues across the Department, as well as several of the Department’s partners and associates in the cultural sector, who will be invited as Guest Lecturers to speak to their experiences in management and other organisational and production roles and to deliver content related to specific practical skills.
