Re-presenting and Embodying Dance History

This module is devised to give students a more complex understanding of dance history at HE3 level, building on aspects studied in compulsory sets at HE1 and HE2 levels. Students experience and evaluate the sources of dance history in material culture as well as in more traditional print and audio-visual sources. They also explore instances of choreographed dances from history through the lived experience of their own bodies. The module raises issues concerning the notion of dance re-creation and re-making, dance interpretation and re-construction, understanding this process as a construction of dance knowledge and as a creative event in a contemporary context. Historical sources, both material and embodied, are to be seen as the material for the presentation and re-presentation of dance history in print, audio-visual and choreographed formats.
