Performance in an Age of Hip Hop
This module explores the many bases of hip hop performance, looking at the specific cultural processes and conditions that led to its development, as well as examining the variety of manifestations of hip hop culture in contemporary performance. Looking at musical performance, spoken word/poetry slams, dance, and “hip hop theatre”, the course addresses the ways in which hip hop has been central to cultural developments of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It looks at the political and cultural importance of hip hop, investigating specific performances and subcultural movements within a broader historical outline.
