Cities of Film

M, T, W, Th, F 09:00 – 12:00

The history of cinema and the modern city are intimately related. The evolution of the city shapes urban identity, which in turn finds voice in cinema, a mirror on society. This course explores cinematic representations of life in cities such as Berlin, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, London, Tokyo and Athens. Students will develop an understanding of how representations of cities on screen reveal national identity, history, the filmmakers’ world view, and the forces that shape urban life. Practical exercises will require students to reflect and draw upon life around them in Athens, and then apply the techniques used in the masterworks of world cinema that they study during the course.
